What i saw was unbelievable, you know local chinese restaurant have this aquarium that keep the red talapia and so on. this tank was fill with red talapia and 2 baung. One of the baung was dying with its belly up. Then one of the talapia came near and push the baung for awhile. Then suddenly its start to chew on the baung and can see the baung skin peeling out. It was very funny, coz i never see anything like this before. Anyway i told one of the worker there and he remove the baung to the fridge.Come think of it, is red talapia so agrresive wan ? and another thing i saw at tmn desa paypond, there litte pink spot at side of the pond, guess what…1cm red talapia fry… and a lot of them even some up to 5 - 10cm which swim in right in to chicken cage where keep our catch. There really breed and in large number.
Aqua culture is big business, in fact most protein producing industry is big business. fish rearing is just as big as chicken farming. If you ever visit a large chicken farm, you would be just as surprised that the healthy chicken will peck on a sick chicken. If it was not removed, there would not be much of the carcass left after the day.
By nature almost all living animals being are in some way a meat eater. There are very few if any, pure herbivors. Even a cow eating grass will take a lizard or an insect if it is there for the taking.
It is not surprising then the healthier tilapia will attack the sickly baung. In nature nothing is wasted, if there is a sick or dead fish, its carcass will not last long. The tilapias, lampams, seluangs even the small prawns will join in thye feast.
From my observations over the years, not that I am an expert in “fishology”, the tilapia is not an “aggressive” fish but more of an opportuinistic one. An aggressive fish to be would be the likes of peacock bass or jaguar chilid who will attack in schools onto any likely victims, sickly or not.
Enjoy the fishing process… including fish borrowed for photoshot…
