This thread establish mainly for our forum friends to post and seek helps and advices from Bro Marlin on SP, instead of posting your questions all over in other threads.

Nice to meet you again on Tuesday at KAGUM Rod’s talk.
Went haruan/bujuk fishing with Rod yesterday. Was beaten flat by their frog team. All my SP did not produce any result. Whereas the frog team Rod & Onn Chai, using frogs bait managed to pull up 2 haruan and 2 bujuk and several prison breaks as our fellows like to refer for those broke free and escaped. The haruans weight over 1 plus kg each and bujuk about 0.7kg each. The location produce much bigger specimen in our previous trips.
Since you are an all terrain angler able to go thru mud, floating water weed and harsh tracking as I gathered, hence would like to seek your help to form a SP team and see whether we can beat the Frog team.
Should you be available, maybe we will fix this Sunday for the event.
The place: A swamp with narrow bunks in between.
The water: Sedimentary brownish colored water. Better clarity when weather is good. Pockets and stretches of water weed covering the bed. Need weedless rig. Very ideal for SP if the water clarity improve. Water visibility yesterday was about 2 ft.
Fish: Haruan, Bujuk and catfish.
You can invite another 1 or 2 SP partners if you have. We will fix up the time and place to meet if you are available.

My first thought at your description was oh wow, let me at them! I’d love to have a go. It’s easier for me to show how I’d fish a particular spot if I actually go there and show you. If your friends are catching on frogs, why not do exactly as they do, but use a soft plastic instead of a frog? Fish it exactly the same way. I can almost bet you’ll catch. Then you can start to refine things a bit.
I won’t be able to make this weekend as I’m already booked for both weekend days. I’m fishing of course and already made plans, but yes, lets try.
Dan, I have some tentative plans to go to Penang as part of a Kagum event and do my SP talk again there. I’ll be at U5 and hope to meet many more of the MFN forummers there. I have been to Tawau twice and heard about the fantastic haruan fishing there and I’m keen to go back and fish at least a day for Haruan. I know I’ll be in good hands with the Otek Hunters. Perhaps we could organise something around a visit there.
I hope this thread develops. Please feel free to ask questions, any questions, and I’ll do my best to help. Some of our MFN SP masters can perhaps assist me in answering any questions. I know there are a few out there.

Sifu maguro.. SP look nice and handy but when used in weedy area the frogbait will surely attract nearby haraun/bujuk more than SP. In my opinion where weeds are not abound, SP stand a chance..unless you use a spinner to attach to your SP.SP will be effective in more narrow area .. Do you agree with me /

You will be in the Toad team if you want to join us. At least if we lost to the frog team we can still win the toad team.
Don’t under grade what SP can do. They are very versatile and depend on how creative you are in rigging them and doing your presentation, I strongly believe, in the good hand it can out beat the frog bait.

No la, flexible a bit ma, can catch both small and big plus tiny fish… those selaung are good bait for haruan le, in fact my biggest haruan to date caught using them haha…
Not very good la, just like to use them… I started sp fishing i think 3-4 years ago, only adicted to them end of last year i think. been using them now on almost every trip…
Recently is pacu time to suffer as i bash them with sp, caught no less than 20-30 pacus using them in a month plus, tat also a day or two per week. Can’t comment much on haruan tho, still noob in catching them using sp, and everything else,
the area condition play a vital role here… i only fish in fews types of haruan country, and i must say each of them need different approach and technique, Am i right uncle marlin?

Following thru yr postings, you are a much better angler then me. Keep it up with your fine work.
Using SP for Haruan, we can just have 1 type of SP but with different ways of rigging and presentation, we can practically fish in any location and condition. Making the rig weedless is my usual practice.
BTW TSJ what kind of SP and rig you use for Pacu? Need to learn from you my young Sifu. Ubob admit losing to you for fishing the smaller species. I admit myself losing all.[:)][:)]

Yea, an sp can be rigged in many ways for different presentation, so it’s very versatile and useful in many situation! Tat’s why i love it very much!
For pacus, i just use those storm wild eye jigging shad 5cm. tat’s the plastic which caught the most pacu. It’s shad like sp, with a fish head jighead ofcourse. Others like grub work well too, i prefer sp with more aggresive motion compared to subtle action lures, therefore i never got anything with my berkley minnow yet haha…
I think it’s productive because of the depht is swim I found that the pacu here(my place here) dwell at near bottom of the pond ore often than not. So using a medium heavy jighead, the sp will swim just above the bottom of the pond and thus attracting more strike from the quarry! tat’s from my point of view la hehe. But fishes are not big, ranging from 800gm to 2kg only, might be some bigger uncontrollable ones. And those tat break the line with their sharp teeth!
Somehow i don’t use wire leader cos i will hamper the lure action, so i just use as light a leader can be, normally 4 to 10lb fluorocarbon. Mainline of 2 to 6lb. Braided is better, can detect more bite and strike better!
Oh, lastly use attractant or lure with smell, such as berkley gulp, tat will enhance the hookup and catch rate too!

So far which SP you guys used are effective on haruan.
Mine killer SP is I think it called berkeley shad/minnow a jerk bait. It is plastic free the kind TJS used with scents. After using it is best to keep it in a bottle of water to maintain it’s softness. It get’s harden when in room temprrature and best not to put it back in the bag it came with, cause it affects the unused ones.
