what a day :P

The only trick I know on how to rescue lures stuck on branches/logs is to bring the rod, hence the line 180° opposite to where the hook-point is embedded but 90% of the time, the opposite hook-point is on water. Only once did I manage to rescue a lure stuck on sunken log was to walk all the way to the opposite side of the tiny pond & pull hard.

If it’s at the bottom, can try construct a lure retriever from snaps, sinkers & thick mono lines, slide it down hard to knock-off the hooks.

Lost many lures at Subang Lake too due to sunken logs along the banks, most ‘dangerous’ is the area just 20m away from the Crocodile farm Restaurant. Hahaha…now that I’m talking about it:

EK would have probably done more than bunga mandi you if you had broken the third rod you were using ? … you know, the rod he lent you ? [:D][:D][:D]

Tiger,

I think you were referring to the cigar cannister method?[:)]

When you get a lure stuck in a tree, usually it’s within reach of your rod (unless you’re Mr Bean, of course). So, you can make this device:

Get a cigar cannister (the aluminium one), or old film cannister, or equivalent. Attach a large hook to the outer side (debarb the hook first), then tie a strong cord to the hook eye. The cord shud be about 9 feet long.

So, to retrieve your stuck lure, just insert the device to your rod tip, snag the branch, then pull the cord down and retrive your lure. Simple.[:)]

or you can simply use The EverMasterful Culky’s method. Just bring along a saw or parang and cut down the offending branch.

oh, yes, also make sure there is no kerangga nesting on the branch. For that complete story call on the EverMasterful Culky.

yep, what a guy. It was one of those times, his Lucky Craft was not all that lucky.

Getting a lure stuck on land is very much ‘rescue-able’ if one is resourceful or determine enough. Trees can climb. Branches can be hacked off. If stuck on water that is only about 2 or 3 feet deep is still ok to walk over, get wet but still can retrieve.

If stuck at bottom on weeds, rocks & garbage should still be retrievable by slowly nodging the line side-by-side or up-down to loosen the hook grip. I once pull up a whole garbage bag of trash at the bottom, turns out to be a rotting cat carcass inside! YUCK x 100!!!

Only major problem are lures stuck right at the bottom of waters on sunken logs. That’s a hook embedded into wood & is near impossible to unhook w/o using lure retrievers.

Nowadays, I only do aggressive lure fishing with at least 20lb quality braid, 50lb mono leader connected to FG knot & cheap or easily replaceable lures. If I’m using expensive lures, I got to be sure the water is relatively snag free or I’ll stick to surface lures like poppers & floating minnows.

Fishing is fun but got to take care of the wallet too.

alternatives:

  1. get a good lure retrival device. many varieties in the market, some works better than others, the pricing of the item is a good guide.

  2. fish only with Lucky Craft lures with their original hooks. It had been said by ‘the EverMasterful Culky’ that the LC is specifically designed with those very sharp but weak hooks. If you are ever snagged, then a good pull will straighten the hook and your expensive lure will be retrived.
Replace the hook as needed but only with the original hook sets so that he can make more money. Perfect arrangements.
What if you are hooked on a fish and the hook straighten? 'The EverMasterful" reply would be you are a lousy angler, how can you be such a cluts to pull so hard that the hook straightens, where the finese? Being a sporting angler, we must give the fish a chance.

Thats CATCH 22 my man…

HAR!!??? Give fish a chance!? I try to be CnR most of the time but allowing fish to straighten my hook & losing the fight is NOT AN OPTION! I may not kill & eat the fish but at least I want to hold it & snap a Victory-pose photo lar after all the trouble of trying to hook & land one.

Yup, agree.
You can tell more stories on the ones that got away…
The ones landed is just a fact (as witnessed by your fishing companions), it doesn’t grow bigger with every re-telling/drink of a beer [:p][:p][:D][:D]

Try asking RK about his GIGANTIC pacu (frm Sek. 24) that got away just as it was about to be netted…[:o)][:o)]

…the rights to brag…

My philosophy is that fishing is awesome and actually catching a fish is a bonus…

The trill is the chase and not the catch. With fishing, the trill ends the moment the fish is landed.

Fishing with ‘weak’ hooks is liken to those who likes to fish with light lines. There are many who likes the feel of the trill of running a 5kg fish on 4lb lines. I for one, prefer the weak hook option rather than using light lines. If you do exercise enough finesse on the drag and line retrieval, the hook will not be straighten and you will get your fish, exactly like if you are using light lines. The big gain is that if you are the clout and pulled too hard, the hook straightens and the fish escapes. The difference is that the fish will not have to drag meters of lines when the same happens if you snap a line with a fish on.

BTW - Many an oldman within this forum knows of the delicate relationship between Culky and me. We go way back, atleast 10 years of fishing history. Our online jabbings were the feature when the U-series were on back then. Gawd, those were happy days.

Most solid lures manufacturers are face with this dilemma…To incorporate a strong and heavy treble or a sharp hook for better penetration..As we know from our experience.when ever we change the treble to a stronger (heavier ) type we will notice a significant changes in the SWIM of that lure…When they design the lures the weight of the two trebles are calculated and predetermined..so any changes will definitely affect the SWIM..I can say that LUCKY CRAFT opts of sharpness over strength…

and there I was trying to pin poor Culky on trying to get poor sods like us to buying those expensive replacement hooks just to inflate LC’s profit margin. My sincere apology and you as the ‘grand oldman’ can buy the beers when we next meet in Penang.
