what a day :P

Brother EK.
I know what you mean.

I too did try to experiment with this “slim sharp hooks” & I also did catch fish with them but after losing many fishes due to straighten hooks, especially the aggressive & elusive ones that takes much leg work, cost, sweat & energy to find them, it is just not worth the investment when the fish gets away. Imagine the scenario of spending hours on Google Maps searching for potential spots, driving far & deep into off-road territories, walking through rough terrains, wading through water & mud, under the hot sun & hauling about 3kg of gear, getting bitten by ants, cut by branches, risking limb & life against wild animals, we finally cast into a weedy, fishy looking spot & get connected with a prized catch. HOORAY! Fish on! then in less than 5 seconds, the fighting ends abruptly. HAR!!!? apa dah jadi!? Reel in the bait & see the hook straighten. I may not want to eat or kill the fish but at least I get to land it & snap a photo for memory sake for future reference. YES! I did it. I caught one too.

I guess the scenario would be very different if one is fishing at payponds. You know the fish is there. You know what fish is there. You know the size of the fishes there. The pond is relatively weedless & free from obstructions & getting line tangled would be minimal. If you had caught most or all of the fish species stocked in the pond, then the next fun challenge to play is to go with lighter tackles. First is lighter lines. Then it’s slim hooks. Then it’s smaller reels. Then it’s shorter rods & so on. An achievement & a skill too for an accomplished angler to land fishes with the lightest tackles.

Different fishing, different requirements, different thinking but we all love MFN because it’s here we all gather & jab each other for fun’s sake. HAHA!

I live for the Hunt!

well jungle fishing does not really mean 30lb lines or 5X hooks, Believe me, I had been there, done that. In fact I was once known as the 30lb angler, being that is my only line for all forms of fishing be it be freshwater or saltwater. Currently, I still do prefer to fish with 15lb or 20lb braids connected to 10lb or 12lb mono leaders.

I do understand the frustrations of having to travel thru thick and thin and yet not been able the fish. Having said that, where would be fun be if it was all that easy. The frustrations and cursing on losing the fish after a good hookup is all part of the game.

you may want to go thru some old issues of Rod & Line and refer to some very informative articles by Uncle Bob (Ubob)on light line fishing for kelah and sebarau. His ‘softly, softly’ approach may surprise you. He will show you all that is necessary to cast for arguably the best fighting species in our rivers using 8lb & 10lb lines.

Intresting point. I used to be just like EK..50lbs/30lbs cost the same..so might as well buy the 50lbs,10-20lbs rod and 15-40lbs cost the same ,sothe 40oni laa…that was my old skool of thought…

i dunt really bother about the catch..its the fun being with the right company…imigine that you are doing botton fishing and no bite for 2 hours…desperation mode kick’s in…you ended up chaging your rig…bait and come up with all sort of weird stuff..then you catch something…even its a tiny misrable lampan..its still a catch…even better if the line snap…thats where you get even geram and have slepless night after that :stuck_out_tongue:

there are alot of fishos here who is desperate..which means must catch something no matter what..

and they are people who dont care about the catch as it’s only bonus…

there is no right or wrong..end of the day…its about having fun and the way u like it and with the right kinda of people..

I’m so sorry, people. But as I read everyone’s Mr Bean days, I could help chortling like a maniac.

So say the partner in crime at U-2, who was rowing the boat when I was chucking a 5inch lure “trying to catch” a 3inch peacock bass.
