Where to buy 'Bowling' type sandals ?

I wonder if anyone can tell me where to buy the ‘Bowling’ brand type of sandals that those rubber tappers use … it’s really really good in that it doesn’t slip at all (according to what I’ve read), compared to your normal sandals which have made me slip and fall and get several extra bumps on my behind … good thing I didn’t break an ankle or anything …

I’ve been to most shops asking for ‘BOWLING’ brand rubber tapper shoes and most of the time the owner looks at me like I’m GILA .. maybe most shops in KL or PJ don’t stock them ?

Any help is very very much appreciated …

They are sometimes referred to as Adiddas Kampung. They are still available at the smaller shops where they sell things like linoleum, school uniforms, fabric, pyjamas, cushion covers, etc. They are a dying breed where once gone will be missed.

RR,

Thanks for the info - will look around and see if I can get a few pairs ..
Hopefully I can find some ..

This shoes are the best to use to go into wet damp jungle’s. The mud it picks up washes off easily. I use ti all the time when in Sarawak.
Each time I go back there, I buy another pair. Just costs about RM7.00

Fishie,

The last pair I bought was in Old Town. There are a couple of shops selling cheap shoes there.

‘Bowling’ shoes are best used wearing two layers of socks: one thin, with the outer one thicker. This saves you from getting blisters, a trekker’s nightmare! So, wear socks when you fit out these shoes. They shud cost around RM6 - RM8 per pair.

Thanks for the replies - good to know that they are still available .. Bro JB, any landmarks as to where in Old Town these shops located?

Fishie,
There are a couple of shops like those I described along Jalan Othman, same row as the Post Office. Try those.

There are a few brands nowadays.
You might want to punch a few holes in it to let water out

Lord, help me see the day when I catch the one that got away!

Fishie,

I bought mine from Taman Chempaka (Tai Kong) in PJ. If you can find the St Ignatius church along the LDP. From the LDP, you turn left into Taman Chempaka. There’ll be 2 rows of shop. The shop is on the right row of shoplots (where Public Bank is). It’s 2 shops on the left of PB.

Stevenk,

Oh ya .. I know where that is .. thanks .. will go look see look see .. thanks for all the replies - didnt know ‘Bowling’ brand shoes were so popular hahaha ..

Fishie,

BTW, there’s more than one design of the “bowling” shoe. The one posted by RR has studs and also laces. Good for trekking along slippery wet trails.

The ones I use for trekking and wading hill rivers (slippery rocks) doesnt have studs, are the slip-on types without laces.

They are light, and thus far less tiring than trekking boots. I dont punch holes in them: when wading sandy rivers, you dont want the stuff to go in. In fact, the great Jerry Cheong made an addition to his bowling shoe: he sewed an old long tube sock to each shoe, so that sand dont get in.

He looks like he’s wearing leg warmers though…[8)]

Guys,

Thanks for the tips and all the information - actually im going somewhere end of this month, so might need to do some climbing on some slippery surfaces - hence the need for ‘Bowling’ sandals ..

Bro JB : interesting modications on the sandals .. but I think I’ll stick to the standard design - Ive got very unforgiving buddies with cameras .. if they see me with ‘leg warmers’ I’ll never hear the end of it .. hehehe

RR : thanks for the info - if all else fails, will call the manufacturer .. lol ..
