please dont mix the topic..this is about “bina bot sendiri”..

eniway..nice to hear the interest of owning the boat..our boating community will have another members..congrats..

Salam..

Bro Chempiang…

Boleh saya tahu…kolej apa yang bro kerja sekarang dan boleh saya tahu nama kursus buat boat ni..kat mana ya kolej ni?

Saya amat tertarik dengan model classic clinker…memang cun…

Satu usaha yg bagus…budaya yg kita patut terapkan dlm masyarakat…bina bot sendiri

UniKL MIMET offer 3 years Diploma courses on Ship Construction and Ship Design. (but the wooden boatbuilding subject only 4 out of 90 credit hours)

i am thinking of developing weekend workshop / short courses / skill enhancement on this DIY boatbuilding (wooden / fiberglass). i am still collecting response from potential participant to offer this workshop.
eniway..i will always share my knowledge here..

it had been very pleased to hear another interest in boatbuilding..working in classic clinkerboat was very challenging but the result was rewarding..(just imagine..the fastening between plank is using ‘copper nails & rove’ was bought all the way from US..)if professionally built..this boat in australia (where i learned the skill) could easily sell AUD10k..

i would suggest for the beginner, start small..get the momentum first..then make some improvement..(tak gitu bro pulsar? [:D]…bot dah siap ke??)

LONG LIVE MALAYSIAN DIY BOAT..

Ya betul… heheh… sampan tak siap lagi pasal kes plywood hari tu le, tebal 6mm belum jumpa kat kampung. 4.5 dgn 9 je ada. Material lain dan alat semua dok tunggu je. Plan dah lukis dah dulu kat plywood 4.5mm yg beli tu, dah potong, lepas tu try2 tengok rasa macam xleh tampung berat badan laks. Apa nak buat, kena fikir safety first, kira scrap la plywood tu (boleh buat benda lain) dan kena carik plywood minimum 6mm jugak. Terpaksa tambah bajet sket. Lepas raya le jawabnya.

Raya boleh tepon abg yu tengok kalau2 dia balik kampung teloi… boleh la gak jumpa takpun gi mancing skali hehehe…

xpe bro..tu part and parcel of DIY..
ade je halangan..
pelan2 kayuh..
bila dah dpt tune..sehari pon boleh siap..

SUMMARY OF BOATBUILDING DIY

what u need to know / do / have for boatbuilding DIY

  • SEMANGAT - tu yang paling penting..
  • OBJEKTIF - kita mesti tau bot kita tu nak buat besar mana..nk pakai kat mana..laut/sungai/tasik etc..ape material kita nk pakai..propulsion type..nk dayung je ke..ade OBM ke..bape orang nak naik bot tu..bila kita dah tau jenis bot ape kita nk buat baru kita cari design dia..
  • Dapatkan boat design / drawing - benda ni kena rajin ckit..tapi kalau search kt internet ade banyak..cari la yg free..cari design yg sama macam objektif kita tadi..kalau xde..cari yg dekat2 sama pon ok..xpon cari kt buku la..kt msia ni susah ckit nk dpt buku2 boat building ni..my favret magazine; WoodenBoat..kena subscribe dari US..tapi kalau xjumpa gak leh la kontek saya..mana blh tolong saya tolong..
  • Lepas tu kaji Construction strategi..method cmne nk buat..biasenya kt internet tu ade bagi skali cmne nk buat..kt awal2 thread saya ade terangkan type of construction..leh wat pedoman
  • baru start prepare BOM - bill of material..kena la buat bajet untuk beli material..sama gak..biasanya BOM ni dia bagi skali dengan design..kt sini kena survey la kt mana nk beli barang..cari la yg murah..
  • Masa yg sama gak kena la prepare tools..ade byk kategori tools ni..ade hand tools..ade power tools..kalau nk lg bagus..air tools..ok..kena la invest ckit utk common tools macam tukul..pahat..yg mana berkenaan..macam power tools, bagi saya..yg paling byk guna.."ELECTRIC JIGSAW" boleh potong plywood, kayu etc..tp jangan lupa alat2 safety plak..beli la google kalau buat keje tu..br nmpk cam professional..
  • sume dah ready..ade kawasan..leh la start..biasenye dimulakan dengan..Bismillah la..[:D]..buat mark and cut dulu..ade org dulu2 kata.."check twice..cut once.." elok gak kalau di praktis kan..keje kayu ni buka mcm keje besi..skali dah salah potong mana leh smbung2..mcm besi leh welding je..
  • dah potong..boleh la assembly..kt sini susah ckit nk terangkan..kena ikut type of boat nk buat tu..ala..folo je instruction DIY yg dpt sblm ni..
  • dah siap..leh wat finishing / painting and outfitting..kasi cantik baru sedap mata memandang..outfitting tu utk tmbh seat ke..strengthening members ke..buat kotak ikan ke..etc.
  • last skali n yg paling best..launching and sea-trial..masa ni baru tau cmne hasil keje kite tu..jgn lupa bwk kawan..(tukang ambik gmbr..leh post kt sini..[:D][:D])

Chempiang… wa tabik respect ama lu laaa… You memang penuh kesabaran, sebab, nak buat bot sendiri tu bukan lah straight foward sangat, bukan semudah macam nak renovate rumah bunglow. Kung Fu kena kuat beb.. tau laaa… bender2 macm ni kan kena ada seni. Bukan boleh pakai super glue & marine ply aje, belum sempat sampai keluar Tanjung Harapan, dah jumpa selut kat dasar laut. But I must congratulate you la bro, because I ada juga tengok orang repair bot kat RSYC tu. Kerja sikit aje pun makan ber bulan2.

I pun ada jugak terpikir nak coba buat boat sendiri; tapi pikir aja pun dah letih, macam ne nak abeh kan. Actually, kat US, bot 2nd hand memang murah gilerrr… tapi nak bawa kemari tu la yg mahal sikit. Anyway hope to catch dgn you satu hari nanti, boleh story panjang lebar..

Sekali lagi bro, tahniah[;)][:)]

GERAMNYE AKU LEPAS BACA THREAD NI.!!!
nampak gayanya aku kena start try DIY jugak ni. kalo ade problems, otai pro ade. tapi mana aku nak cari material tu kat tpt aku. haaaaaa…

KAWE PUN TERTARIK, TP LEBIH BERMINAT UNTUK BUAT KAYAK.. ANY IDEAS BRO??

http://whitesandangler.multiply.com/

I came across this forum by"accident" and found it very interesting. I know of only a few Malaysians who have succeccfully built their own boats. One of the main reasons is the availability of “cheap” polyester or commonly know as fibreglass boats. Another reason is that the availability of boat building matertials.
Mr Cempiang,
You have been a good guy explaining a lot on this forum. Keep up the good work. Can you please tell me a good place to buy marine plywood? Is that any chance that we can get Gaboon quality wood? As for resins, I know polyester can be obtained readily but what about epoxy? No many dealers know the difference between polyester and epoxy. I really would like to know more as I am about to start building a Gypsy catamaran. Study plans had been purchased and some budgeting done. Just waiting for a boat shed to be ready to start off.

Hi Gnow. Welcome to the club. If you are around the Port Klang area; there are some hardware shops selling most of the stuff that you would need. It’s just a matter of shopping around for the best price. Hardware shops nearer to the coasts do have more marine stuff in stock, as compared to the ones in the cities.

For stainless steel bolts & nuts, I get them from a bolt & nut shop in Jalan Ipoh, KL. Well stock & reasonable prices, it’s on the row of shops fom the MOBIL station, next to a superbike shop, opposite the pondok polis & dim sum shop. Will try to get the address soon. Cheers

am sorry, i have to admit my weaknesses; i have less clue about resources / purchasing / price as the works is already taken care by other department and supplied by nominated supplier with markup price.

i hope any forumers have any ideas please help Gnow and me as well.. in fact, i have no stock of epoxy since their price quite high. (budget not approve..)

eniway good luck gnow..and..where r your location?

Mr Hitman and Mr Cempiang, thank you for your input. I am staying in the East Coast in Taxes. If yopu do come along the way, give me a call.
Years ago I built a kayak from wooden frames and canvas. It lasted me a few years but that is OK since the investment was only RM95.00!
I wonder if any one here has used the local Meranti plywood. Dont know how it compares with the Gaboon type. I was told by the supplier that our marine ply is BS1088 standard.
Cempiang, where is the location of your college? Do you teach anything on composite materials and its constructions(foam etc). I would like to pay you a vist if I happen to be in KL later
Hope to see more Malaysians building their own boats.

Gnow

i am based in Lumut, perak..next to lumut port. it is about 3hrs from KL. i would be happy if anyone would like to pay visit..my area of speacialist is small boat construction; wooden and fiberglass (and i am still learning). but the institute is yet to implement advance technology in composite like resin infusion, rtm etc.

Mr Cempiang,
Yes I will be in Lumut on the 28 Nov and 6 Dec. I would like to pay a visit to the institute. Incidentally, is this the place where my friend Lt Cdr Rtd Yeo donated a big catamaran?
